Dès 1950, avant même de décider de leur union, Jacques Ruelland, alors étudiant en peinture, et Dani Dupin, étudiante en sculpture, tous deux aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, décident d’oeuvrer ensemble à travers un moyen d’expression qui d’emblée semble leur convenir : la céramique. Tout de suite divers partis-pris se dessinent dans la façon dont ils abordent leur art.

Sur le plan de la forme, ils veulent créer des volumes dépourvus d’un axe, dont le profil, dessiné d’un seul trait servirait d’inspiration pour la création de pièces, dont le galbe descendant serait toujours un peu différent du galbe montant, de l’effet même du coup de crayon. Sur le plan de la matière, ils désirent travailler sur une base sombre, c’est ainsi qu’ils s’intéressent au résultat qu’apporte la poudre de manganèse incorporée à la terre blanche de Provins qu’ils utilisent.

Sur le plan de l’émaillage, ils vont, là encore, être forcés à de nombreux essais puisque les émaux vont réagir de façon bien particulière sur ce nouveau support. C’est la conjonction de toutes ces résolutions qui fera le succès de leur oeuvre dont la palette vibrante restituera tant le dynamisme que l’élan créatif du couple. Leur atelier, situé rue de Buci, leur permet de baigner dans l’univers créatif de Saint-Germain-des-Prés où ils côtoient des artistes de toutes les disciplines, tandis qu’ils exposent à la Galerie du Siècle. Très influencés par l’univers de la danse, où ils ont de nombreux amis, ils créent des familles d’objets, dont la dynamique de groupe, leur permet de transposer un jeu scénographique en proposition plastique.

Les Ruelland poursuivent tout au long de leur création parisienne une oeuvre aux coloris éclatants, jusqu’à leur départ, en 1970, pour la région d’Avignon où ils auront deux ateliers pendant vingt ans. L’un, au pied du mont Ventoux, dans lequel ils concevront les formes, l’autre, aux Angles, où ils multiplieront leurs recherches en matière d’émaux. Enfin, la découverte des qualités sonores de leurs formes en balance les conduiront à créer leurs innovantes vasques sonores, d’où s’élèveront des concerts sous les mailloches de Michel Deneuve et Alain Kremski.

It is the conjunction of all these resolutions that will make the success of their work, whose vibrant palette will restore both the dynamism and the creative impetus of the couple. Their workshop, located rue de Buci, allows them to immerse themselves in the creative universe of Saint-Germain-des-Prés where they rub shoulders with artists from all disciplines, while they exhibit at the Galerie du Siècle. Very influenced by the world of dance, where they have many friends, they create families of objects, whose group dynamics allow them to transpose a scenographic game into a plastic proposition. Throughout their Parisian creation, the Ruellands continued to work in dazzling colors, until they left in 1970 for the Avignon region where they had two workshops for twenty years. One, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, in which they will design the shapes, the other, in Les Angles, where they will increase their research into enamels. Finally, the discovery of the sound qualities of their forms in balance will lead them to create their innovative sound basins, from which concerts will take place under the mallets of Michel Deneuve and Alain Kremski.
